Street Drugs 3.0 is a 16-hour online course that explores the rapidly changing landscape of illicit substances encountered by modern EMS providers. From fentanyl analogs and nitazenes to xylazine, synthetic cannabinoids, designer stimulants, counterfeit medications, and emerging hallucinogens, providers must recognize evolving drug trends while making rapid, evidence-based treatment decisions.
Through realistic patient encounters, interactive case studies, simulations, toxicology review, and current research, students will develop the clinical confidence necessary to identify toxidromes, manage complex overdoses, protect themselves during hazardous responses, and improve patient outcomes.
This course emphasizes practical field medicine rather than memorization, giving providers tools they can immediately apply on their next shift.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Explain current trends in illicit drug use and overdose epidemiology.
- Recognize common street drugs, slang terminology, and drug paraphernalia.
- Differentiate major toxidromes using patient assessment findings.
- Develop evidence-based treatment plans for opioid, stimulant, depressant, and hallucinogen overdoses.
- Safely manage behavioral emergencies associated with substance use.
- Recognize complications of emerging substances including xylazine and nitazenes.
- Demonstrate proper airway management during overdose resuscitation.
- Apply scene safety principles when responding to potentially hazardous drug-related incidents.
- Integrate harm reduction concepts into prehospital practice.
